Nutrition Counseling and Diabetes Education

At St. Mary's Hospital and Clinics and Clearwater Valley Hospital and Clinics we have full service kitchens for our patients.

Good nutrition is important and we have a registered dietician available for specialized meals and individual counseling.

Diabetes Diabetes: Diabetes Self-Management Education (DSME) is offered at Cottonwood, Kamiah and Grangeville Clinics with a referral from the patient's healthcare provider. Vicki Berg, RN, a certified diabetes educator, provides diabetes education for people with new-onset and pre-existing Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes; diabetes during pregnancy; and pre-diabetes. St. Mary's DSME program sponsors a diabetes support group in Kamiah and Grangeville from September through May; partners with Rachell Larsen, RD for dietary consultations; and with St. Mary's Healthy Horizons weight-management support group.

The Diabetes Prevention Program is offered to residents of all of the communities within the areas served by St. Mary's Hospital & Clinics and Clearwater Valley Hospital & Clinics. This entails all of Clearwater, Lewis and Idaho counties with a small portion of Nez Perce county. Prediabetes is the focus of the program in an effort to decrease advancing into type II diabetes. The program was developed by the CDC in conjunction with the NIH and is focused on lifestyle changes to promote better health while decreasing the risk of developing type II diabetes. Over the course of the year-long program participants are mentored by a trained lifestyle coach to develop goals and objectives in an effort to incorporate healthier nutritional habits while increasing physical activity. These 2 variables have been found to decrease not only the risk of developing type II diabetes, but also to delay or reduce the risks associated with many chronic diseases.

Laura Hollingshead, RN, CDE is the program coordinator for the Diabetes Prevention Program for both SMHC & CVHC. The program is offered without charge to all members of the communities we serve, not just to patients of our facilities. There are certain eligibility requirements for participation in the program as outlined by the CDC. Further information can be obtained about program specifics related to dates, times, and locations of sessions by contacting Laura Hollingshead at (208) 476-4555 ext. 8126.
